College students going into business think their secretaries will do their writing for them. Young business people seldom have private secretaries. Many of us foolishly object to taking courses in writing. Our notion that only poets and novelists have to write is unrealistic. Practicing engineers and scientists say they spend half of their time writing memos and reports. This attitude shows a naive faith in the competency of their secretaries. Students going into the technical or scientific fields may think that writing is something they seldom have to do. Other things being equal, a person in any field who can express ideas clearly is sure to succeed.

I don't think you should go out with him. Because he may still be getting over his long-term girlfriend with who he just broke up with. He doesn't have a job which means that more than likely he has no ambition out of life. Also with him not have a job you will be the one paying for everything when yall do go out.

Race is still an important consideration in American politics today. Because the isue is still around in our world today. We should be more open to race now more than ever. I recently heard President Bush speak about hate crimes in school.

Argumentative essays are not only meant to show your views and opinions but to also sway your reader to the side that you are on. This type of essay is a good way for me to get your opinion about a subject out and into the open. My essay took an obvious side but it just listed why capital punishment should be abolished.

Reading "How to Say Nothing in Five Hundred Words," by Paul Roberts, was almost like sitting down and listening to a lecture. Due to the fact that this book was so boring and there wasn't anything that really caught my attention. It wasn't as interesting as many books are. There was tons of great and useful information, but I had nothing to relate to it.

Topic Proposal #2

I. For this essay, I want to use a global approach on the issue for the "freshman 15." In this essay I would also like to use a proposal approach instead of using a policy approach. I want to use a proposal approach because I believe that it will be easier for me to get my point across this way by giving a lot of information on the issue.

II. The major problem with the "freshman 15" is that no one can really find that it does in fact happen and that there is no exact weight gain. Some other problems are if they can't find out exactly what it is that causes college freshman to gain weight if any at all then they can't pin point what you can do to prevent it. The main debate for this issue is that some say that the "freshman 15" is real and that you will gain as much as fifteen pounds your first year in college, and the others say that there is no such thing as the "freshman 15" that is just some myth. The problem is important because this worries so many incoming freshmen and it is important for incoming freshman to be aware of the facts.

III. I think that the solution for this problem is to keep on doing research about the subject until they can find exactly what it is that cause's incoming freshman to gain weight and exactly how much weight they will gain. If they keep on doing these experiments then than can someday put an end to the "freshman 15." And if they are able to do this it will put many incoming freshman at ease and they want stress so much about their weight anymore. They can then give college freshman the information on what is the best to eat and what exercise is most helpful to stop weight gain. Once all this has been done I believe that the so called "freshman 15" will just kind of die out and no one will worry about it anymore.

IV. I believe that if they keep researching this subject they will be able to finally figure out if there really is a weight gain and it will also help put a stop to worries of incoming freshman. I also believe that once they figure out the causes they will be able to help freshman to not gain weight. The more they know about this the less people will worry about it.

V. I am basing my proposal off the point of view that the "freshman 15" doesn't really exist. One of the sources I will be able to use from my exploratory paper is from "Freshman 15: Valid Theory or Harmful Myth" the authors in this paper say that they found no significant weight gain at the end of the year.

VI. The one concern that I have is that the topic I chose for my last paper doesn't really work for this new paper. As of now I don't have any questions about his paper.

Campus Issue

I think that USC needs to change the policy about parking on campus. I feel that this needs to be change or at least thought out a little bit better because the student parking lots are so far away from campus that if you park there at night and have to walk halfway across campus it is not safe to be doing this. With the way parking is set up I would have liked to got a job this semester but due to my parking circumstances I wasn't able to get a job. I just didn't feel that if I got a job and had to work late one night that if I had to walk back from my car I would not be safe. The closest parking lot to me that normally has a spot to park at is about 5 to 10 minutes away on foot. It isn't in a really nice park of town it's kind of away from everything. Yes there are other options but I can't afford to buy a spot in the bull street garage because it is EXTREMELY expensive. I feel that they need to make more parking lots that are closer to freshman dorms and campus so that it will be a little more safe for people to walk back at night by theirself.

I guess something that happened to me that made me change my mind about something was drinking and driving. A few years ago I wouldn't have thoguht twice about someone drinking and driving. I believed them when they said that they were straight to drive because who else would know how they were feeling better than them. But one of my friends was in a very bad car wreck due to someone else driving drunk and she was in a coma for about a month and just about didn't make it out. That changed the why I thought about it. You don't have to be drinking and driving to get in a wreck it can happen to you even if you haven't had one drink. But if you are drinking and driving that highers your risk to hurt yourself or someone else. I am strongely against drinking and driving now. Because you can take your life or the life of someone else in just a split second. So there is no need to make that risk higher for you.

Short Writing Assignment #11

11) The two articles that I found the most credible are the last two article I read "Opposition to Shelter Rise" and "What Did Not Work: Effort to Centralize Homeless Services." The first two articles I read are the less credible "Four Corners Best Answer on Homeless" and "Homeless Situation Has No Easy Answers." You can check the credibility of an article by checking the time period it was written, the type of article it is, and most the time you can check also by using a scholary search engine or school based search engines. You can use less credible articles in a research paper by helping that to make up your opinion on a certain subject and you can also use it by just giving your paper a little more information and more veiws on the subject.

I believe that the editorial "Columbia Council Should Support Mission, Homeless" was the most rhetorically effective. I think that is was the most effective because you went into a lot of detial on why the city council should not deny the the request. In talks about by addressing the proposal we are making a strong and important point. The article also address how many people become homeless year-round. It also talks about why the proposal is so important and how it will help to put a stop to homeless people and such.

SWA #10

8. Each editorial does employ a certain rhetorical style in each of their writings. Each piece differs because the first piece is just getting to started with what is going on and how things are supposed to work, the second is telling you how things didn't pan out right and that sort of thing, the last piece tells you about how they are now trying to open up a day center for ill homeless people. They are all similar because they are all talking about a center thing such as trying to open up a Homeless Rehabilitation Center on Shop Road. They serve to function of getting everyone to see each side of the project.

These two authors first talk about how the weight gain into your freshman year of college is often referred to as the “freshman fifteen.” They discuss how there is a weight gain in college freshman but it is never as large as fifteen pounds. These two authors use a few different studies to help to get their point across to the readers. They discuss why someone students may not have such a large weight gain or any at all over others. Then they go onto to talk about the many different life changes that the students go through in their first year in college. Such as the food that they are consuming, the influence that their parents once had on their diet that is no longer there. They refer to a study that compares two groups of college freshman in a large urban Canadian University.

For this article there were three different authors who helped full their thoughts together and create a helpful paper. They talk about the way that many freshman gains as much weight as they do is because of the snack food they eat, the larger meal portions, and especially the decreased physical activity. The researchers used in their paper found that both men and women gained weight but men seemed to gain the most weight gain. Hoffman et al found that there was no difference in sex or race concerning weight gain. In their study they received responses from about 131 out of 582 college freshman and only 125 became eligible for the observation. Out of these men’s weight averaged about 3.7 pounds and women’s was about 1.7 pounds.

These authors believe that it is not evident from the earlier studies done on freshman students, that the weight gain comes from increases energy intake, decreased expenditure, or maybe even both. This study was done to present the changes in body weight, body composition, and RMR in college freshman. They got their height, weight, and BMI to start with before beginning the study. They had 27 males and females to see how changes in dietary habits and body composition. They recorded the the students diet record for three days, two days during the week and one day during the weekend. Such as Wednesday and Thursday, and then Saturday or Sunday, and maybe even Monday and Tuesday. In this study they had 26% of the freshman students had BMI’s at baseline, which classifies them as being overweight or obese.

In this paper these authors talk about how seniors in high school are afraid that when they go off to college they will gain the “freshman fifteen.” Some researchers such as Graham, Jones, Hodge, Jackson, and Sullivan believe that first year students do not gain a substantial amount of weight. Others have reported no significant weight gain or loss. The others who do believe there is some weight gain say that there is a gain of about a .73 pounds per month in 1985 and then in 2004 4.2 pounds over a twelve week period. Lewis et al suggests that the most weight gain comes in the early 20s and then slows down.

They say that promoting the idea that there is a weight gain in college freshman as much as 15 pounds can be harmful. This may cause the students to drink and take in more alcohol intake. The purpose of this study was to see if concern for gaining the freshman fifteen has an effect on college freshman eating behaviors, eating attitudes, and weight changes.

In this study they collected 68 students from Cornell University. They were made to complete two questionnaires one focusing on the lifestyle they had during their high school years and the other focusing on the student’s lifestyle relating to their eating habits, sleeping, and exercising habits during the first semester. They took measurements of the students body weight with a Healthometer scale. They did the study over a twelve week period. The thing that they found that was affecting the weight gain the most was the students eating lunch and breakfast at all you can eat dining halls.

In this paper they talk about many people believe that there is no way to get around the freshman fifteen. In one of the most recent studies more than 90% of college freshman knew or had heard something about the Freshman 15. This paper focus on the fact that most of the weight gain is coming from not only unhealthy snacks but also the large consumption of alcohol. They tell you that there isn’t enough exercise in your first year in college. And just by this being said you can avoid the Freshman 15 just by exercising and eating healthier.

Bailey, Stephen, and Goldberg, Jeanne P. “Eating patterns and weight concerns of college women.” Jan. 1989. Academic OneFile. 1 Mar. 2009
In this last paper the two authors tell us how nothing has been verified about the short term fat gain. Some other researchers have found that weight gain for women fluctuate from the age 18 to 24 years old. In this particular study the women analyzed the nutrient content of their diets.

SWA#9

First Paragraph
The word "retarded" has been used for many years and in many different ways. The word was first used to mean something that is bad or something your really don't like. In this article Gail Williamson is discussing the fact that today the word is used to mean someone who has Down syndrome or someone who has special needs. I agree with her that the word in that context needs to me stopped because that can be a very hateful word and it can really hurt the kids who have Down syndrome or other types of things. I can also see where she sees the word as being a hate word because some kids use those words just to be mean to the kids who have those disorders. People do need to stop using that word in that context and start thinking about how it should be used. I also agree that movies shouldn't use "retarded" as being slow or mental challenged. If kids are seeing that famous people are using it that way they are going to go out and use it like that because they think that is "cool".
Second Paragraph
In the article by Lynn Harris "The 'Retarded' Renaissance" she talks about a mother who has a son with Down syndrome and how with movies and society using the word "retarded" to refer to someone with Down syndrome, mental disorders, and other disorders. The mother says that this is hate speech, but I don't totally agree with that. Yes the word isn't the best or nicest way to talk about someone who has a mental disorder, but I don't think that it is hate speech. The kids who use that word that way use it because they have either seen or heard someone use it in that context. I don't believe that banning the word will stop all the things that are going to happen to the kids with Down syndrome. I feel that people don't really think about the way they are using it until after the fact. I also don't agree that kids are using it just to be mean because they have seen a movie where a famous actor has used it and they just believe that if you use that word then you will be cool and hip like they are.

Topic Proposal for Exploratory Essay

1. The issue that I have chosen to write about is the freshman fifteen. The issue is whether or not in your first year of college you gain fifteen pounds. Not everyone will gain weight there first year of college but many do and the issue here is that the reason you gain weight your first year of college is because you are getting you used to different foods and a life style that is totally different from what you are used to.
2. The thing that really got people interested in this subject is that a lot of the time the freshman fifteen does happen to freshman. So people think that just because you are freshman you are bound the gain fifteen pounds your first year. But this is not true because this is dependent the amount of alcohol, calories, and the food choices you make. The weight gain be avoid if you eat healthy and stay in shape. The main group of people this is aimed at is college students and mainly students who are about to be freshman or students who will soon become freshman.
3.There are three different groups for this issue. The first is the group that believes you will gain fifteen pounds your freshman year due to the fact that you are going through a lot of changes. The second group is that of people who believe that you do gain weight but only around 2 to 3 pounds, they also say that this is due to lack of exercise and not eating healthy enough. Then there is the group that believes the freshman fifteen has a lot more to do with what sex you are. They say that males gain the most weight in their first year of college and there is still the ones who say it has nothing to at all to do with sex or race.
4.I am personal interested in this issue because I am a freshman in college and I have gained weight since my senior year in college. I really just wanted to find out more about this issue and see what causes this. And I can say from my personal experience my body has gone through a lot of changes with me moving away to college not just weight gain but many other things.

1. The difference between Academic Universe and LexisNexis are AU descrides itself as the "world's largest scholarly, multi-discipline, full text database" with peer-reviewed articles from more than four thousand periodical titles and LexisNexis indexes six thousand international titles, including national and international newspapers, plus it provides full text and is updated hourly. The World Wide Web is different because you don't need a password to access it since it is free and available to everyone. Although not all the sources on the internet are good sources. Also it isn't like the indexed sources in the library database because they haven't appeared in print, because not all material on the World Wide Web has to go through a publisher or editor.

2. A bibliography is an alphabetically arranged list of evaluated sources that you have decided are credible, possibly valuableto your research, and also related to the issue at hand. A annotated bibliography is a bibliography that has summaries and responses to help show that you understand the content, your reaction to the information, and so that you can visualize the source. Doing this can help you to better understand what it is you are writing and how the best way to research it would be.

3. You check to see if the source is associated with an organization, is it listed under a reputable domain, is the source published in print or online journal that is peer-reviewed, is the online source duplicated in print, is the source accessed by a large number of people, is the source directed mainly to extremists, is the evidence in the source stacked to represent one point of view,is the source current, is the source sloppily edited, undocumented, or unreasonable, and is the source moral or immoral, ethical or unethical according to your values.

4. You would create a research plan to help you organize your notes and ideas and also to guide your research.

5. Plagiarism is when a writer deliberately uses what someone else says and uses it as there own. And they don't acknowledge where these words came from they try to put them accross as there own. You can avoid this by sorting through your ideas and those of the others you have been researching.

I picked the bright pink background because I like bright colors and I wanted all the different colors to help me get my point across. I did the font in all different colors to help stress the fact that I like to paint my nails all different colors. I used the images to help you visualize what exactly I was talking about and help you to see things for yourself. I guess I picked this as my topic because I could really think of anything else that I didn't mind sharing with the class. But know that I don't have to think so hard to figure out something to do I can come up with some other great things I would have been able to do.

The first add that I picked was the MAC add 1984 and the second MAC add that I picked was the MAC love. I suppose that the main claim for each add is to make people want to buy a MAC computer and in doing this they tell you how the MAC offers other things that other PCs can't and want offer. In the first add the supporting agrument is that the new computer will be more advanced than the actual year it is. The second add has a supporting argument that the love virus can't get into their MAC computer and so from then on when you think love think different. Both of these adds are trying to get you to buy the appel computer even though the adds are from very different times. They don't jsut come out and say we want you to buy our product because it is better than anything out there but that is pretty much the cause of the add. Their target audience is anyone who is interested in computers and the newest and most advanced technology. These adds are target at pretty much anyone whose interest this sparks. I think the first add reflects the time buy how the people in the add are dresses and just how the add looks overall. You can tell that the add is old because the effects aren't as up to date as things are no a days. In the second add you can tell that it is a newer add because it is talking about a virus and today viruses are so common and they hurt so many computers. Were as when the first add was produced viruses weren't so common.

The add is in darker colors and it looks kind like an outdoors add and there is a foot on the rock wall at one of the Woodlands it has information on leasing, how to find out more, some amenities and the starting cost of one room. I think that this add works as me being the audience, because it just makes the woodlands sound like a great place and it makes me want to find out more about it. The audience intended for this add is that of college students or young adults. Yes the claim of this add is clearly stated. The support in this add is that it shares with all the different things that it offers. The evidence is that you can go look on their website and see just what they are talking about. The warrant in this add is that the leasing office is the one who grants the permission of this add. I think that this add is so effective to many is because they took up half the page and it looks very interesting to so you just read more. Although the colors are very bright and pop out at you they work for this add. Considering the place is called the Woodlands.

Post Secret

I believe that the text in this message is text that is trying to make you see beyond just the actual picture and that it has more meaning than what you see. I think that there is a verbal explicit claim in this image. I believe that the implicit claim is that she is telling you what she fears will happen to her daughter if she has one. I think that the author is a female and that she suffers from an eating disorder. The audience is for people who my have the same secret or just anyone interested in others secrets. I do believe that the text does help support what is being implied. I think that the visual component plays on your emotional card because it is a picture of a little girl crying.

In class writing

Visual and oral arguments are different in many different ways. The main way that I see them as being different is that visual is something that you are watching and you can see with your eyes instead of hearing. Oral arguments is an argument that is being spoken or just words coming out of someones mouth.Visual is more than likely an agrument on paper or body language. They may differ many different ways but this is just what comes to mind when I am asked this question.Visual arguments can help you to see and understand the argument more so than if it is a oral agrument depending on the person or persons watching or listening to the argument.

I chose to writing about "Are Bloggers Journalists?" by Christopher B. Daly because I thought it was interesting since we as a class are bloggers and we blog at least twice a week. So I felt like this article related to me and the rest of the class. There are many people in this article trying to decide if bloggers are really journalist or if they aren't anything at all really. Some say that they aren't because they have no editor or no one to proof their writings before they post them to the internet.
I my opinion if you are writing some then it should count no matter if you have an editor or not. Plus many of the writers they are talking about in this article are pretty good writers and they know what they are doing and how it needs to be done. I don't think anyone should be able to say whether or not a blogger is a journalist that's just a personal opinion. I don't know that I believe all bloggers are journalist but the ones they are talking about in this article I believe are more than likely journalist even if they don't meet all the standards of Daly's opinion of what exactly a journalist is.

For my fourth writing assignment I chose to examine "Debate? Dissent? Discussion? Oh, Don't Go There" by Michiko Kakutani as my piece to examine. The text of this particular article was good but a little confusing at times for me. It may not seem confusing to someone else but for me I had to concentrate very hard just to stay on track to what Kakutani was talking about. Over all he did well with the text and how he organized it. I think that Kakutani had young reader such as college students in mind when he wrote this piece. Maybe even some college professors. Because he talks a lot about colleges and the students. I learned that he believes debate is important for students to understand how to debate properly and that debate is slowly disappearing. He also uses a lot of quotes from other professors to help get his point across. Im not sure that I can think of any constraints that could have influenced the author of this piece. The only constraints that influenced me as a reader are the things that were being talked about in this article. The title also helped me to want to read this article. I do share the fact that I do think debate is growing less important to the younger generation and they something needs to be done to stop this. I do find this argument convincing because he brings up a lot of good points and he knows what he is talking about.

I picked an article from The Daily Gamecock about gas stations charging customers extra for using credit cards.

http://media.www.dailygamecock.com/media/storage/paper247/news/2008/07/16/News/Gas-Charges.For.Charging-3391240.shtml?reffeature=recentlycommentedstoriestab

The argument in this article is wether or not it is right for gas stations to charge the customers extra to use there credit cards or not. One guy said that it is not right to charge people extra because it is just a good as money if not better in some ways. Another said that the gas stations have no other option with gas prices being the way they are. Although you can see this from many different angles many customers have no clue about being charged four to twelve cents more for using their card. In 2007 the National Association of Convenience Stores said credit card fees were costing the convenience stores $7.6 billion. Yes that is a lot of money but I think that if they don't to have to pay the extra for the credit card use then why even bother to have the machines in their store. I don't believe it is fair for the stores to have the machines for you to use but yet they are charging you extra just so that you can use them. It is there responsibility not the customers. If they don't want the extra fees then don't have a card machine and there want be any problems with this issue. Charging extra for gas is crazy because gas is already so high it's not right for those of us who do not carry cash around to make us pay more.

Short Assignment #2

In Kathleen Parkers article, "Seeking Balance in an Either-Or World," she talks about how it is difficult to find a comfortable place to land your thoughts and writing. In saying this it is hard for many people to find the middle. Most times you are forced to pick a side. Due to the fact that many people want a straight forward answer. People don't want you to beat around the bush with them. In the end she goes onto say that the middle or independent group is beginning to grow and become stronger. This group is growing because many people do not agree political and social views.
She uses abortion to help back up her thoughts about people not agreeing with the way the government wants things done. Many see abortion as murder but the government doesn’t back that up. They try to make it a safer and better procedure. I think she could have come up with some more examples to help get this point across because this is a touchy subject for many. She does touch on the fact that we teach high school students how to use a condom so therefore we should be able to work out the pros and cons of aborton.
I believe Parker when she says that we need a middle and that many people are looking for the middle. These people have started to make there own decisions without focusing on what the groups have to say. She also talks about John P. Avlon's book and that he believes that there is a balance between realism and idealism. I do agree that ther is an idependent nation grow as we speak right.
Parker has some very good points in her artical and for the most part I agree with many of them. She did an overall good job trying to get her point across to her readers and it was very easy to follow what she was saying. I do wish she would have come up with a few more examples though.

Short Writing Assignment 1

Describe your best writing experience. What made it so good? Now describe your most frustrating writing experience. What made it so bad? Which of these two experiences affected you the most? Why?

I guess my best writing experience would have to be when I had to pick an ad that was created to appeal to a certain audience. So that I could create an analysis of the ad targets a certain audience and what ideal, ideas this particular ad takes advantage of there audience to get the message across. The fact that I really got into this assignment and understood exactly what it was that I thought the ad was trying to say made it so good.

My most frustrating writing experience was the last paper I had to write for English 101. I had to analyze the brand style of two similar products. This was most frustrating for me because I wasn't able to relate as well to this particular assignment. I couldn't get past the part of analyzing the brand style of two similar products. I wasn't really sure exactly what that was supposed to mean.

The one that affected me the most was the good writing experience because it made me feel good to know that I had written a pretty good paper and that I knew what I was trying to get across to my readers.
